Gene & Georgetti

Iconic/NotableRiver North · Steakhouse Community-sourced, unverified
📍 500 N Franklin St, Chicago, IL 60654

Gene & Georgetti has been Chicago's oldest steakhouse since 1941, when Gene Michelotti and chef Alfredo “Georgetti” Federighi opened it in a building that still looks like it's hiding from the River North glass towers that grew up around it.

$$$

The split that defined it held for nearly three decades: Federighi ran the kitchen until his death in 1969, Michelotti worked the bar and floor until his own death in 1989, and the Michelotti family has run it ever since — no corporate ownership change, no concept refresh, just the same bone-in steaks and a dining room that still feels like 1962. It became the first Chicago steakhouse to win a DiRoNA award in 2001, and in 2026 the Jean Banchet Awards — Chicago's own answer to the James Beard Awards — named it Iconic Restaurant of the Year.

A 4.7-star rating across nearly 6,700 OpenTable reviews is an enormous, genuinely current sample for an 80-plus-year-old restaurant, with diners consistently calling out the steaks, the service, and the old-school Rat Pack-era room over the actual menu prices.
