Firecakes is named for the fried 'firecakes' Karen Fox's grandfather, William 'Billy' Hobbs, made in a cast-iron pot over an open fire while baking for 1930s logging camps in northern Wisconsin, and the shop's recipe is built on his. The order here is the Birthday Cake donut, two yeast donuts stacked about four inches high under icing and sprinkles, which comfortably feeds two or three, or a buttermilk old fashioned if you want the purest version of the recipe. The Pistachio Old Fashioned and chocolate cake donuts round out the case. It opens at 6:30AM daily and runs until 6PM Monday through Thursday and 7PM Friday through Sunday.
All Firecakes shops are cashless, the donuts are small-batch and baked from scratch daily, and popular flavors can sell out, so pre-order online if you have your heart set on one. A vegan, gluten-friendly chocolate donut (made with almond flour, in a shared kitchen) is on the menu, and the shop ships nationwide through Goldbelly. Catering orders of six dozen or more go through the events team.
