Ed Debevic's

Super GemStreeterville · American/Retro Diner Community-sourced, unverified
📍 159 E Ohio St, Chicago, IL 60611

The Ed Debevic's concept actually started in Phoenix in 1983, a fictional greasy-spoon owner as the whole bit; Chicago restaurant legend Rich Melman brought a licensed version to River North the following year, and it's the Chicago location that ended up outlasting every other city's. The original spot on Wells Street ran for over three decades before closing in 2015 — the building was torn down for an apartment complex — and Ed's came back in 2021 at a new Streeterville address, just as rude as before.

Your server is going to be rude to you on purpose, and you're going to love it. That's the whole bit, and somehow it works for over 11,000 reviews running.

The whole premise: servers in flashy 1950s costumes who are paid, specifically, to be sarcastic to you, dance on the counters on the hour, and treat "Eat and Get Out!" as an actual house philosophy rather than a joke. David Schwimmer and Mark Ruffalo both worked here before either was famous — Schwimmer as a roller-skating waiter, Ruffalo playing a character named Frankie. The food itself is straightforward diner fare, all-beef burgers and milkshakes, which is fine, because nobody's really coming for the food.

They're coming to get roasted by their server and love every second of it. It's a genuine family outing despite the roasting -- reviewers bring kids as young as 7 and report them begging to come back -- though anyone easily offended by scripted sarcasm should sit this one out.
