Coda di Volpe takes its Neapolitan pizza seriously enough to be one of only three restaurants in Chicago with actual Vera Pizza Napoletana certification — and it shows the confidence of that credential by sending pies to the table whole, with a pair of scissors, so you cut your own slices.

Chef Chris Thompson (who'd go on to open the butchery-driven Lardon in Logan Square) built a Southern Italian menu around that pizza, in-house-cured meats, and homemade seasonal pasta, in a Southport Corridor space big enough to be a genuine neighborhood hangout by day and a buzzing destination by night — complete with a near-360-degree wraparound bar, a pizza counter overlooking the kitchen, and a patio that's packed 300-500 covers deep on a good weekend.

Ranked 47th on the 50 Top Pizza USA 2024 guide, it's proof that a restaurant can be both a reliable family dinner and a legitimately decorated pizzeria at once.
