Boonie's is what happens when a fine-dining chef cooks his grandmother's food on his own terms.

The sisig alone is the reason to make the trip — sizzling, properly seasoned, exactly what it should be.

Joseph Fontelera, formerly the executive chef at Arami, started Boonie's as a food stall before moving it into the ground floor of a two-flat on Western Avenue in Lincoln Square, and the menu runs on his Philippines-born grandmother's recipes and his family's own 1970 arrival in Chicago. Michelin noticed: it earned a Bib Gourmand in 2025. The move is the Sizzling Sisig ($18), chopped pork hash with egg and a secret sauce on a sizzling plate, which is the dish people cross the city for. Start with Lumpiang Shanghai ($6) or the Berkshire pork BBQ skewer ($9), then go big for the table: Lechon Manok, a spice-rubbed roasted half chicken ($34), or Humba, Cebuano-style braised pork shank ($45). The kitchen's finer side shows in dishes like a crab-and-trout-roe tortang talong and black cod adobo, and there are real vegan options (pancit canton, maitake piaparan).

Finish with a mango float. It's a small, cozy room, so book on Resy. Dinner runs Wednesday and Thursday 5-9PM and Friday and Saturday 5-10PM, with lunch Friday and Saturday 11AM-2PM; it's closed Sunday through Tuesday. There's no running deal; the Bib Gourmand is the value statement. Private events for 20 to 50 people are available.
