The Bavarian Lodge has been a family-owned German restaurant on Ogden Avenue in Lisle since 1986, and four decades in it still runs on its own terms: walk-in only, no banquets, no pub crawls ('Nope.

$$

Just... no,' says its own FAQ), and an Oktoberfest that's more gemütlich than oompah. It calls itself a Bamberg-style pub, and the timber-lined rooms feel like one. The order that tells you the kitchen is serious is the sauerbraten ($24): beef marinated for several days in a spiced pickling marinade with juniper berries, slow-roasted and smothered in a dark, tart red-wine gravy, served with spätzle and braised red cabbage. Schnitzel is the other pillar — a classic pork wiener schnitzel ($23) with pan gravy on the side, a house-signature version under a cream, Riesling and mushroom gravy ($27), a cordon bleu, a Hungarian-style Budapest schnitzel — plus a caraway-dusted roast duck, stuffed potato dumplings and oven-warm pretzel rolls (three for $5).

The beer program is the other half of the reputation: 42 constantly rotating drafts poured in proper glassware, a deep bottle list of imported classics and rarities, and a few wooden barrels tapped around Oktoberfest. There's no happy hour or standing discount, by design. Kitchen hours run 4 to 9pm Wednesday and Thursday, 4 to 10pm Friday, noon to 10pm Saturday and noon to 9pm Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday, with the bar open an hour later; carryout isn't available during peak dining times, and only complete parties are seated.
