Barrel + Rye is the Geneva whiskey bar and kitchen on South 3rd Street where the bourbon list gets as much attention as the food, and the food can hold its own.

The duck confit poutine is rich enough to share, and the birria egg rolls are the twist that makes this Geneva spot worth remembering.

It's a sibling of Bourbon Belly, and the drinks show the family resemblance: a monthly featured whiskey poured at barrel proof, a cocktail of the month that donates part of its proceeds to a local cause, and old fashioneds and smoked Manhattans built on Buffalo Trace and Evan Williams bonded. The kitchen runs a gastropub menu with a few curveballs. The shareables are the move, with birria egg rolls stuffed with braised beef and two cheeses, Chinese five-spice sticky ribs, a crab stack with mango, tuna tartare and a duck confit poutine smothered in white cheddar curds, bacon and house duck gravy.

Bigger plates run to a birria grilled cheese, a brie burger with pear-bourbon jam, a Southern fried chicken sandwich with maple, loaded mac and cheese, beef bourguignon and a bourbon-spiked Bourbon Street jambalaya. Happy hour is generous and early, Monday through Thursday from 2 to 5, with $5 drafts, $10 old fashioneds and Manhattans, half-price wine and a lineup of $10 to $12 plates including a smash burger and sticky ribs. The kitchen opens at 11am every day and stays open until 11 on Fridays and Saturdays, and tables can be booked through Toast.
