Avaspi means "pure water" in Kurdish, named after a river that runs through Mardin, the multicultural southeastern Turkish city near the Syrian border where owner Mehmet Duzgun grew up and started in restaurants roughly 25 years ago.

He opened this Lakeview spot in March 2024, in the former home of the seafood restaurant Pescadero, built around Anatolian tapas — the shareable mezze tradition of the region where Turks, Kurds, Arabs, and Assyrians have eaten from the same spread for centuries. The kutilk dumpling on the menu is literally his mother's recipe. Everything is meant to be ordered several plates at a time and shared across the table: haydari (a yogurt-herb dip), muhammara (walnut and red pepper), stuffed dates, real Turkish coffee.

The room itself leans modern — black marble tables, velvet seating — a contrast with the centuries-old food traditions on the plate. Come with people and order more than feels necessary; that's genuinely how the menu is designed to work.
