The Bear Ate Chicago

Two Chicago voices argue about Mr. Beef, Sydney's food crawl, and whether Richie's Pequod's run is the most Chicago scene on television — the podcast companion to our field guide of the same name.

Nicky

South Side, mid-40s, gravelly and dry. Skeptical of hype until proven wrong, then insufferably smug about it. Has opinions about Italian beef he did not ask to share.

Dani

West Loop / Fulton Market-adjacent, early 30s, bright and fast-talking. Already been to four of these places this month. Plays straight-woman to Nicky's grumbling — and gives it right back.

Cold open — both voices, quick back-and-forth, no music yet

Nicky[dry] So The Bear’s over. Five seasons. Guy still can’t say thank you when somebody compliments his food.

Dani[laughs] That’s the whole show, Nicky.

NickyI know that’s the whole show. I’m just saying, we should talk about it, because for five years this program has been quietly doing more for Chicago tourism than the actual tourism board.

Dani[excited] Okay — welcome to The Scoop, I’m Dani —

NickyI’m Nicky —

Dani— and today we’re doing the field guide. Every real Chicago spot that showed up in The Bear, across all five seasons. We wrote the whole thing up on the site, with an actual interactive map, but we wanted to argue about it out loud too.

Nicky[dry] “Argue” is generous. I’m just going to be right a lot.

Segment 1 — Mr. Beef

DaniStart at the start. Mr. Beef, Orleans Street. That’s the real place The Original Beef of Chicagoland is based on.

Nicky[warm] Yeah, and they actually filmed some of the pilot inside the real shop before they built the set. That matters to me. That’s not some location scout finding a “beef-adjacent vibe.” That’s the actual counter.

DaniThe son of the founder’s been in the show.

NickyChris Zucchero. [pause] Look, I’ve eaten a lot of Italian beef in my life, and I will say this once: get it dipped, get it wet, hot giardiniera, and don’t you dare eat it with a fork.

Dani[laughs] Nobody said fork.

NickySomebody’s always thinking about the fork, Dani. I can feel it.

Segment 2 — Sydney’s crawl

DaniOkay, my favorite stretch of the whole series — Season 2, the episode “Sundae,” Sydney just goes and eats around the city for a day.

Nicky[skeptical] Walks right into Kasama. No line. Unprompted skepticism: that’s the least realistic thing that show ever filmed.

Dani[laughs] There’s no dragons in this show, Nicky.

NickyI know! That’s my point!

DaniShe also hits Lao Peng You, Pizza Lobo, avec, Kasia’s Deli for pierogi, and it ends at Margie’s Candies for a sundae.

Nicky[warm] That’s a good day. That’s an aggressively good day. If somebody offered me that exact day, no notes, I’d take it Tuesday morning.

DaniThe message of that whole episode is basically: research is just eating, if you frame it right.

Nicky[deadpan] I’ve been telling my boss that for years.

Segment 3 — Ever and the Pequod’s run

DaniOkay but THE scene. The one everybody talks about.

Nicky[excited] “Forks.” Richie stages at Ever — real place, real chef, Curtis Duffy’s actual hands are in some of those shots — and a guest says she’s never had real Chicago deep dish.

DaniAnd the whole kitchen just — mobilizes.

NickyRichie SPRINTS to Pequod’s.

Dani[laughs] It’s hospitality as, like, a special-ops mission.

Nicky[warm] And that’s the thing people miss about that scene. It’s not about the pizza being good — although it is good — it’s about somebody deciding a stranger’s disappointment is unacceptable and doing something about it in real time.

Dani[pause] That got a little emotional for a pizza bit.

Nicky[dry] It’s a good bit.

Segment 4 — the Season 3 montage

DaniSeason 3 opens with this big montage — a dozen-plus real Chicago places, just people working. D’Amato’s Bakery, Lou Mitchell’s, Metric Coffee, Tortello, Vienna Beef, Jim’s Original for the Maxwell Street Polish, Chiu Quon Bakery, Paulina Meat Market —

Nicky[warm] — and that’s the smartest thing the show ever did, honestly. Not another tasting menu. Just: here’s who made your breakfast before you woke up.

DaniIt’s not “here are famous restaurants,” it’s labor. It’s the people folding dumplings and roasting coffee at five in the morning.

Nicky[dry] Most shows would’ve cut that for time. This one made it the cold open.

Segment 5 — the dive bars, the drive-in, and going neighborhood

DaniAnd it’s not all fancy. Season 1 names a whole episode “Ceres,” after the bar under the Board of Trade —

Nicky[laughs] Ceres will put you on the ground. Real bar, real reputation, since ’67.

Dani— Superdawg shows up at a party, Green Door Tavern’s in there, Roeser’s Bakery —

Nicky— and by Season 4 Richie’s just at J&M Tap, this tiny unmarked Ukrainian Village dive, and it feels so natural you’d swear they didn’t even tell the actor it was a scene.

Dani[warm] That’s kind of the whole thesis of the show, right? Same week you can be at a Michelin place and a dive bar with no sign, and neither one is the “real” Chicago. They both are.

Segment 6 — the finale and the close

DaniFinal season, most of it’s trapped inside the restaurant for one brutal night —

Nicky— but Chicago still sneaks in. Sydney and her dad get breakfast at White Palace Grill. Marcus is back around Lou Mitchell’s.

Dani[sighs, warm] Diner breakfast after a bad night is just — it’s correct. It’s the right choice every time.

Nicky[deadpan] Hash browns don’t judge you, Dani.

Dani[laughs] That’s going on a shirt.

Nicky[warm, slower] Look — the thing I keep coming back to. This show could’ve just done the Mount Rushmore. Pizza, dogs, beef, steakhouse. Would’ve been fine. Nobody would’ve complained.

DaniBut it kept going.

NickyFilipino food, Chinese dumplings, Polish pierogi, Mexican birria, Croatian sandwiches, a butcher counter, a coffee roaster — it just refused to pick one Chicago.

Dani[warm] Because there isn’t one.

Nicky[dry, but warm underneath] Yeah. Chicago wants you fed. Sometimes with tweezers, sometimes with giardiniera on your wrist. Both count.

Beat

Dani[bright] Alright — the full field guide, every stop, plus the interactive map, is up on ChicagoSpecials.com, in The Scoop.

NickyGo look at the map before you argue with us in the comments.

Dani[laughs] There’s no comments, Nicky, it’s a podcast.

Nicky[deadpan] There’s always comments somewhere, Dani.
