The Bad Plus — Farewell Tour
About This Event
One of the more inventive piano-trio jazz acts of the last two decades is calling it — genre-agnostic instrumental sets that borrowed as much from indie rock and pop covers as from straight jazz. A real closing chapter, not just another tour stop.
The trio's three members had actually played together since 1989, but didn't formally become The Bad Plus until 2000, recording their self-titled debut after just three gigs as a group. A Village Vanguard set caught the ear of a Columbia Records rep, and they signed to a major label in 2002 — rare territory for an experimental jazz act. They built their reputation partly on full, serious reworkings of rock and pop songs: their 2008 album For All I Care reimagined Nirvana's 'Lithium,' Pink Floyd's 'Comfortably Numb,' and Heart's 'Barracuda' through a jazz trio, treating them with the same respect as original compositions rather than as novelty covers.
