Rufus Wainwright — Solo Tour
About This Event
Just voice and piano, no band to hide behind — Wainwright's baroque-pop songwriting actually holds up stripped down this far, which isn't true of every artist who tries a 'solo tour.'
He grew up inside music: his parents were folk singers Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, and he was performing onstage with his mother and aunt by age 13. His own catalog runs from a widely acclaimed 1998 debut through a stretch derailed by addiction and a genuine recovery that produced some of his strongest records. Two projects define him for a lot of listeners who've never bought one of his albums: his widely covered version of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah,' and a 2006 Carnegie Hall concert where he recreated Judy Garland's legendary 1961 live show there note-for-note with a 36-piece orchestra, later released as his own first live album.
Worth knowing: this runs two consecutive nights, both at 8:00 PM — check oldtownschool.org for pricing and which night still has availability.
